„Wilderness is important, because it allows us to improve our understanding of ecological processes. It provides us with areas delivering a unique and complex set of ecosystem services. It inspire us and leaves a natural heritage for our children.” said Henrique Pereira (Regional Director, ICNB, Portugal) at Europe’s Wilderness Trip in Majella, when he received the PAN Parks certification from Zoltán Kun (Executive Director, PAN Parks Foundation).

Peneda-Gerês is the only National Park in existence in Portugal. The mountainous protected area is located in the north part of Portugal and it is a transboundary protected area with Xures Nature Park, Spain. Founded in 1971, it covers an area of 72,000 hectares and has an extraordinary diversity of climate, environments and scenery. Having once been the home of the brown bear and the mountain goat, Peneda-Gerês is today one of the last refuges of the great predators, such as the wolf and the royal eagle.

PAN Parks is the world's first operational, third-party certification system under WCPA (World Commission on Protected Araes) Framework for Management Effectiveness. PAN Parks sets an important benchmark for high standards of management in protected area management and it also engages directly with the tourism industry which is a sector that constitutes not only a key threat to conservation in many areas, but also potentially is an opportunity for protected areas.

Therefore Peneda-Gerês PAN Parks membership will guarantee well management of top European wilderness area in Portugal and support of spreading message throughout Europe about unique tourism destination where local business partners support protection of this rare place. For visitors that means an unique opportunity to enjoy last piece of Portugal wilderness and for conservationist opportunity to see mother nature at work.

The magnificent Peneda-Gerês National Park is a wild and dramatic place consisting of two main mountain ranges Peneda and Gerês with rural villages scattered around. An important feature of the landscape is the constant presence of water because of proximity Atlantic Ocean. Brooks and waterfalls are common at every mountain slope and the park is crossed by several rivers.

The importance of having PAN Parks at the most Western part of Europe is described by PAN Parks Conservation Manager Vlado Vancura: “To have a PAN Parks in the Iberian Peninsula is extremely important for the protection of Europe’s wilderness and also for the PAN Parks Network. It proves that wilderness can still be found in the historically heavily managed Mediterranean region and that the PAN Parks Network really has a Europe wide scope. We hope this will be motivation for other Mediterranean countries such as Spain, France, Croatia or Greece. Together with the very first marine PAN Park (Archipelago NP, Finland 2007) and potentially very first freshwater PAN Park (Soomaa NP, Estonia) the PAN Parks concept is proving its universal value. It also proves that wilderness is a concept attractive throughout all of Europe and that the decision to have a PAN Park in a particular country depends very much on people's mindset and their willingness to do something to improve the protection of Europe's Wilderness”.

Whether you want to relax in the clean mountain air, take in the wide range of flora and fauna or take part in extreme activities, Peneda-Gerês National Park is an amazing place to visit.
